In our second year at university, our English teacher suggested that we create a blog. Two of us reflected on the challenges of managing our time effectively, not only pragmatically, but also in terms of integrating our aspirations into our daily lives. This led us to recognize that as remote learners, our studies hold a significant and distinct place in our lives, shaping our identities and requiring continual adaptation.
As our journey progressed, two additional students joined the group, eager to contribute their perspectives on distance learning.
We are students enrolled in a French university's distance learning program, sharing a desire to study. Each of us brings diverse experiences of learning in various ways. For some, it has become a lifelong experience. We realized that our educational choices reflect our lifestyles and diverse circumstances.
On this blog, four individuals collaborate to share our perspectives and insights:
Céline: After a hiatus, I returned to academia with a different perspective, balancing studies with other commitments. In contrast to the past, I don't particularly want to have a student life. I just want to study independently because I have enough desire to learn to be able to organize myself. At least, it is what I want to question through the blog, as an opportunity to situate oneself by the act of writing about ourselves to confront the look of others. It will finally be a new way of writing for me.
Catherine: I'm a mother of one. I love the experience and the challenge of living abroad learning new cultures, languages and ways of thinking. I'm planning to live abroad with my daughter. I'm a dreamer that likes imagining stories, but I seldom write them down. Writing for a blog is a challenge for me.
Panagiotis: Originally from Montreal, Canada, I recently completed an internship for my Master's in International Relations. I'm now concurrently studying Modern Greek and Philosophy. My interests span literature, philosophy, politics, and art. I'm an avid traveler and sailor. I'm currently preparing to embark on a career in political affairs with the United Nations, hence my choice for a distance learning course.
Léa: I'm on a double cursus in French literature and Philosophy, one of which is through distance learning. I'm 19 years old. I like traveling, learning about all little things. I have a busy and otherthinking student life. I love reading, writing.
This blog is both a personal challenge and a course assignment.
Our aim is to create a space where everyone can reflect on the unique aspects of distance learning, access information about it, and share our own experiences.
Initially, our intention was to create a space for remote students like ourselves. However, we believe this blog can also be of interest to anyone considering or already engaged in distance education, including parents exploring options for their children. Whether due to circumstances such as epidemics, illness, work commitments, or personal preferences for alternative learning methods, distance learning offers flexibility that traditional schooling may not provide. It allows education to come to people when last century we were all channeled to go to school.
We wish for this blog to be a place to discuss what distance learning is, what it brings to our lives, and what it says about us.
